In September of '99 we had a some vacation time so we went to the Baltistan region of northern Pakistan. It seemed more like a mountain climbers' and trekkers' destination but we decided see what it offered tourists.

THE FLIGHT
According to one guide book, the flight to Skardu is the most spectacular in the world. I can say that it is the most amazing I've seen. There is peak after tremendous peak--7,000, even 8,000 meters.

Most of the flights to the northern areas are little Fokkers but the Skardu plane is a big 737.  It felt strange to be zooming up this ever-narrowing valley, below the peaks in such a large plane.

Not being a mountaineer, I don't know the names of these mountains but a very enthusiastic passenger told me that this one (above, cut off on the left, I think)  is Nanga Parbot.
